Why You Can’t Currently Buy Turkey Tail Mushroom in the UK (And What to Consider Instead)

If you’ve arrived here looking for Turkey Tail mushroom and noticed it’s suddenly unavailable, you’re not alone. Over recent months, many customers have found that Turkey Tail has quietly disappeared from UK and EU retailers — and there’s a specific regulatory reason why.

What Is the Novel Foods List?

In the UK and EU, foods and ingredients are regulated under what’s known as the Novel Foods Regulation. A “Novel Food” is defined as any food that was not consumed to a significant degree within the EU before 15 May 1997.

If an ingredient is classified as novel, it cannot be sold unless it has gone through a formal authorisation process. This process is extensive, costly, and can take years — requiring detailed safety data, toxicology reports, and regulatory approval.

Why Turkey Tail Is Affected

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) has now been classified under this Novel Foods framework. As a result, retailers in the UK are no longer permitted to sell Turkey Tail products unless and until authorisation is granted.

Because of this, we — like many other responsible brands — have had to remove Turkey Tail from sale in order to remain fully compliant with regulations. While product pages may remain visible for informational purposes, purchases are no longer possible at this time.

Will Turkey Tail Be Available Again?

We sincerely hope so.

Interest in functional mushrooms continues to grow, and public attitudes toward natural, food-based supplements are evolving rapidly. Many people are actively seeking alternatives that feel more natural, preventative, and supportive of long-term wellbeing.

Our hope is that, over time, legislation will better reflect this shift — allowing clearer pathways for ingredients like Turkey Tail to be reviewed, assessed, and potentially reintroduced in a regulated and transparent way.

Until then, we must work within the current framework.

Functional Mushroom Alternatives to Consider

While Turkey Tail is currently unavailable, there are several other functional mushrooms that remain fully approved and widely used — many of which support similar areas of wellbeing depending on your goals.

Reishi Mushroom
Often chosen for its calming and balancing properties, Reishi is commonly used to support relaxation, sleep quality, and overall resilience during periods of stress.

Chaga Mushroom
Known for its antioxidant content, Chaga is often used as part of routines focused on recovery, inflammation support, and general wellbeing.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom
Best known for cognitive support, Lion’s Mane is commonly used to support focus, clarity, and mental performance — particularly useful for busy or demanding lifestyles.

Maitake Mushroom
Maitake is frequently included in routines aimed at overall vitality and balance, making it a popular choice for those focused on long-term health support.

Each mushroom offers its own unique profile, and many people choose to rotate or combine them depending on their needs.

Looking Ahead

We understand how frustrating it can be when a product you rely on suddenly becomes unavailable — especially when demand and interest are higher than ever.

We’ll continue to monitor regulatory developments closely, advocate for clearer frameworks around functional mushrooms, and ensure that everything we offer meets the highest standards for quality, transparency, and compliance.

If and when Turkey Tail becomes available again, we’ll be ready.

Until then, we remain committed to helping you find the best possible alternatives to support your routine.
